Paul Bunyan State Trail

Watch out for rough spots

August, 2024 by askrens

We started in Bemidji with the intent to ride to Hackensack on road bikes. Hit a large bump just south of Laporte (going 18-19 mph). Ended up with a broken collar bone and fractured elbow in two places. Still a great trail.

Mora Multi-Purpose Trail

great & bad

August, 2024 by kaelikraker

I rollerbladed the trail and parts of it were really bad, so I took neighborhood streets and parts of it were amazing and very well maintained. The views were really pretty. I would recommend it.

Lake Wobegon Trail

WOW

August, 2024 by mwskibike

We started at the west end of this trail where it connects to the Central Lakes Trail and rode east about 6 miles. Trail has recently been repaved, so it was SMOOTH!!! Wish we had not done the last 10 miles of bumpy Central Lakes as we were tired and it was middle of the day and quite warm. There is little shade at the west end of the trail and no water available, so bring plenty. The trail was recently repaved - the dirt has not been built up on the sides, so be careful you don't run off the edge - it will be a BUMP! Wish we had the energy to go farther!

Great Northern Trail

Good Trail

July, 2024 by kyjoe80

Mostly a flat trail from Elk River to Zimmerman. You can make it almost 20 miles if you bike from Elk River to the Smokehouse on Hwy 4 in Zimmerman. Take the outside routes in Woodlands Trails Park and keep going around the Elk River Golf course. Early mornings and later evenings you may see both turkey and deer along the routes. It's an enjoyable easy route and I'm looking forward to the expansion north.

Lake Wobegon Trail

Recommend!

I rode from Albany to West Union. I wish there were long trails like this where I live. Very well maintained and smooth. I hope to take the north leg to the covered bridge also.

Glacial Lakes State Trail

Nice ride

July, 2024 by xgqrms2jbn

I rode from Paynesville to Spicer. There were a few wide cracks you wouldn't want to get caught off guard but otherwise the trail is in good repair. The trail is closed just a bit past Hawick heading west but I was able to move over to the closed hwy 23 for a mile or so to detour back to the trail. Very nice summer's day ride. I would recommend riding this trail if you have the chance.

Willard Munger State Trail (Hinckley-Duluth)

Beautiful scenery, but dangerous trail for cycling

June, 2024 by wkamilkyway

I have ridden about 80 miles on this trail, and it is through gorgeous country. That said, it is a dangerous trail for cycling. The trail is not well-maintained. There are significant cracks and blisters in the asphalt, especially in the section south of Carlton to Moose Lake State Park. Some of these problems are marked with white spray paint so you can avoid them, but some are not. It is unsafe. I’m an experienced cyclist and can handle a range of conditions- but I will not ride this trail again.

Gorgeous for walking, but to ride a bike on the Willard Munger is to risk your physical safety or damage to your bicycle.

Paul Bunyan State Trail

Scenic Nisswa to Pequot Lakes

September, 2023 by nancybro5

We rode bikes from a dirt parking area at 7111Co Rd 13 in Nisswa, MN right onto the Paul Bunyan trail. The trail is relatively smooth & very scenic with lakes & tree coverage beside the trail from Nisswa to Pequot Lakes but further north it gets very bumpy due to frost cracks. Nisswa has many fun shops & great places to eat so suggest this stop. Will do this trail to the south of Nisswa to Brainerd next summer.

Great Northern Trail

Twice we've taken this trail for a Sunday outing from Woodland Park in Elk River to Zimmerman, enjoying a light lunch @ D's Smokehouse & then back. Can't wait for the continued expansion north.

Paul Bunyan State Trail

paul bunyan trail Bimidji

Enjoyed the mostly level, well maintained surface. Need some bathrooms or places to get water. Did a century ride one day, great trail but signage needs improvement. Around the Walker area very confusing. Trail around Lake Bimidji and into Bimidji state park was a beautiful ride. Stayed at the Comfort Inn in Bimidji, lakeview room. Awesome.

Worth the Effort

August, 2023 by jkboucher

I rode the trail in 2 days, staying overnight in Walker. Would have been better to stay in Hackensack, as it was about 80 miles to Walker, with hills the last 7 miles. Soulshine Cycles in Hackensack provides shuttle service among other services. Brainard and Bemidgi have trails throughout the town (nice that they are bike-friendly) but usually are not marked, therefore easy to get "lost". Trail surface was a bit rough in places but nothing too serious. New paved spur at end of trail leads to Bemidgi State Park. Be sure to check out The Chocolate Ox in Nisswa.

Soo Line Trail (Northern Route)

not for bikes

August, 2023 by rranguette

We hopped onto the trail in McGregor and we’re very disappointed with the trail. It’s a mixture of large rocks and sandy soil. Probably better for all terrain vehicles and snow mobiles, not suitable for bikes.
